FAQ

Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions.

GENERAL

Because we are a family business, we offer a wide variety of products and especially because our seeds are of excellent quality and have been stored in an optimal manner. We are in partnership with Birri, a market gardener located at the Jean-Talon market, in business for more than 50 years, and who supplies seeds to many Quebec farmers. You could say that we know seeds!

It can happen that our stocks are sold out. In this case, the seed will become available again when we are restocked.

THE SEEDS

For many reasons! Please see our article on heirloom seeds here.

Although we are not certified organic, we strive to offer our customers the widest possible choice of naturally grown seeds. Even if we privilege open pollinated heirloom seeds, in order to answer the needs of our customers, we also propose a limited number of hybrid seeds, not treated and always without GMO. If the variety is hybrid, you will find a mention in the product description.

We buy our seeds from various seed companies located in Canada, the United States, Italy, Germany and France. In Canada, we collaborate with farmers and artisanal seed producers who supply us with a certain number of vegetable varieties.

The majority of our seeds are heirloom, but some are hybrids. This information is written on each product page.

We do not have any GMO seeds. For your information, these seeds are very expensive and are generally intended for farmers. Our seeds are mostly heirloom, and some are hybrids (you will see one or the other in the product description).

Germination tests are conducted regularly to ensure that the seeds sold have a high germination rate. If the seeds are stored properly, planted within the next 12 months and the germination method is appropriate, the seeds will generally have a germination rate typically between 80-95% and more. (There are some exceptions, as some varieties of seeds have a lower standard rate of germination). If, on the contrary, they are poorly stored, per example in a humid environment, are planted in several years, and the germination method is not adequate (soil, water…), the germination rate will be lower. Seeds may not even germinate at all in the worst case scenario!

Read the growing instructions for the seeds you buy, because the germination method and the time required for a seed to germinate differ greatly from one variety to another.

In addition to the quick tips available on our seed envelopes, you can find more exhaustive growing information on each of the seed pages under the ‘Growing Tips’ tab. See below for a screenshot with the area circled in yellow.

The enemy of seeds is moisture. Be sure to store your seeds in a dry place. We recommend putting your bags in an airtight glass jar.

As for the ideal temperature, if you plan to use your seeds during the year, you can store them at room temperature (18-21 degrees). If, on the other hand, you want to use them in the coming years, you can store them in the freezer, again in a glass jar.

Regardless of the storage method, the germination rate of the seeds will gradually decrease with time. But if they are stored properly, the germination rate will decrease much more slowly and it will take several years before they do not germinate at all.

If you are ordering during the winter, you may be wondering if the seeds could be affected by the cold during shipping? Fortunately, the answer is no! Seeds are not sensitive to cold, but they are sensitive to moisture. Seeds can be stored in the cold to preserve them longer, and some varieties of seeds, such as strawberry or lavender, require cold treatment (stratification) to obtain an adequate germination rate.

Our envelopes are 8 cm wide by 12 cm high. Please note that since fall 2021, quick growing tips are printed on the envelopes.
