Bean – Soya Karikachi
The Karikachi variety produces soybeans (edamame) covered with a fine, short hairy coat that contain about 3 seeds per pod. They can be eaten whole by removing the seeds inside the pods as you go, or shelled before incorporating the beans into recipes. In both cases, they must be cooked for a few minutes in boiling water or steamed before being eaten.

Soybeans are bushy plants (they are between 30 and 60 cm tall), so they do not necessarily need support. However, as harvest time approaches, the filling of the pods can weigh the plant down and it will tend to bend towards the ground. You can let them fall back and bend down to harvest the soybeans as the pods are ready (they are well rounded) or simply pull the plant out with the roots (this speeds up harvesting, but some of the pods may not be fully ripe). When space in the garden is limited or to facilitate the harvesting of soybeans, the plants can be staked or held upright with a garden net. This way, the plants will not spread out at ground level and will not risk crushing other plants that might be next to them. Creating a bed of plants and creating a mound of soil at their base will also help the plants stabilize.
