A variety of broccoli grown for its leaves rather than its flower buds. Taste halfway between broccoli and kale. Native to Italy, Spigarellio smooth leaf broccoli (Foglia Liscia) is eaten in minestrone or tenderized in olive oil as a side dish vegetable.

Growing tips
Conditions of germination:
- depth of sowing: 5 mm
- optimal temperatures for germination: 10 to 30ºC
- time for germination: 5 to 10 days
When to sow:
- indoor sowing 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date in your area OR
- direct sowing after any risk of frost
Sowing technique: in pocket
Inside the same hole, sow 3 to 5 seeds spaced 1 to 2 cm apart; when the seeds have germinated and the seedlings have reached a height of 5 cm, keep all the seedlings if space is available or keep only the most beautiful ones.
- for indoor seedlings: harden off the plants outdoors before transplanting them into the garden
- for direct seedlings: thin the plants for their final location in the garden
Transplanting outdoors (for indoor seedlings):
- When all risk of frost has been eliminated
Distance in the garden:
- between plants: 20 cm (sow closer together for a young leaf crop)
- between rows: 45 cm
Plant height: 45 cm
Soil: moist, rich and well drained
Exposure: full sun
When to harvest: 25 days for young leaves, 45 days for mature leaves
Specificity:
- For a fall harvest, sow in early summer.
- The whole plant can be harvested at maturity, or cut some leaves as needed for a continuous harvest.
