Cabbage – Napa Michihili
$3.99
Along with bok-choy, Michihili or Michihli cabbage is one of the best known varieties of Chinese cabbage. It is also known as Peking cabbage or Pe-tsai. Similar to Napa cabbage with its elongated and cylindrical shape, its soft green leaves and its wide, white and flattened stems. Crunchy and refreshing, it can be eaten both raw and cooked. For denser, more compact heads, plant Michihili cabbage in mid-summer for a fall harvest.

Growing tips
Conditions of germination:
- depth of sowing: 1 cm
- optimal temperatures of germination: 10 to 30 ºC
- time for germination: 5 to 10 days
When to sow:
- sow indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last spring frost in your area for an early harvest
OR - direct seeding in late July/early August (or 10-12 weeks before the first fall frost) for a late harvest
Seeding technique: in pocket
- Inside the same hole, sow 3 to 5 seeds spaced 1 to 2 cm apart. For indoor sowing: when plants have two true leaves, transplant into individual containers while waiting for transplanting in the garden. For direct sowing: when plants have 6 true leaves, thin out at the final location. Transplant or consume removed plants.
Transplant outdoors for seedlings started indoors in spring:
- When all risk of frost has passed, about 2 weeks after the last frost in your area.
- Optimal growing temperatures (post-germination): 12 to 21 ºC during the day, 4 to 10 ºC at night
Distance in the garden:
- between plants: 30 to 45 cm
- between rows: 60 to 75 cm
Plant height: up to 45 cm
Soil: well drained, enriched with organic matter or compost
Watering: moderate, maintain a good humidity
Exposure: full sun
Days to harvest: 70-75 days from transplanting, 90-95 for direct sowing
Seed life: 3 to 4 years
Specificities:
- The use of a floating cover is recommended for cabbage seedlings to protect them from insects. It is removed when the plants start to produce their apples.
- Late cabbages keep better than early ones.
