Capsicum annuum. Mulato Isleno is a large triangular Mexican chili pepper (12 x 6 cm) with a spicy and fragrant tip. A cousin of the ancho chili pepper and nicknamed “chocolate poblano,” of which it is a milder variant, it ripens to a rich chocolate brown and offers a flavor reminiscent of cocoa and raisins. Mild to moderately spicy (1,000 to 1,500 Scoville units), it is ideal for preparing mole poblano, stews, stuffed dishes, or dried dishes. The Mulato Isleno pepper is tolerant to heat and drought.

Growing tips

Germination conditions:

Sowing depth: 5 mm
Optimal germination temperatures: 25 to 30ºC
Germination time: 7 to 21 days

When to sow:

Sow indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost date in your area.

Sowing technique: in cluster

Sow 3 to 5 seeds in the same hole, spacing them about 1 to 2 cm apart. When the seeds have germinated and the seedlings have reached a height of 5 cm, keep all the plants if space is available, or keep only the best ones. Transplant into individual containers while waiting to transplant into the garden.

Transplanting outdoors:

after all risk of frost has passed, when the soil has warmed up and the average nighttime temperature is above 12ºC.
