Growing tips
Conditions of germination:
- depth of sowing: 5 mm
- optimal temperatures of germination: 18 to 29 ºC
- time for germination: 7 to 21 days
When to sow:
- direct seeding when the soil can be worked in the spring or after the last frost in your area when the soil temperature remains above 7.5ºC
- successive sowing every 3 weeks until August for a continuous harvest
Sowing technique: in line
Draw a line in the ground (in a pot or in the ground), then sow the seeds in it
Distance in the garden:
- between seeds: 1 cm
- between plants: 5 to 8 cm
- between rows: 20 to 30 cm
Height of the plants: 25 cm
Soil: cool, well drained, deep and sandy
Water: regular watering
Exposure: full sun
Days to harvest: 70 to 100 days for a large carrot, but they can also be eaten younger, as soon as they are formed.
Specificities:
- thin out (remove) young plants when they are 2 cm long in order to give enough space to the remaining roots (allow for an average spacing of 4, 6 or 8 cm between plants depending on the variety and the desired degree of maturity); removed seedlings can be consumed
- after the thinning (the fact of removing the plants too close together), bring back the soil around the base to avoid that the collar turns green but also as a preventive measure against the carrot fly which lays its eggs in the vicinity
