Growing tips
Conditions of germination:
- depth of sowing: on the surface (press the seeds into the soil and cover them lightly with soil) or maximum 1 cm
- optimal temperatures of germination: 15 to 22 ºC
- time to germination: 20 to 40 days
Suggested cold treatment: press seeds into moistened potting soil, then place the pot wrapped in a transparent plastic bag in the refrigerator for 14 to 30 days. Remove the pot from the bag and germinate under the usual germination conditions of heat and light. Another technique that works well is to place the seeds between two sheets of moistened paper towels and place them in a clear plastic bag (such as a Ziploc) or a clear plastic container (such as a grocery store strawberry container). In both cases, it is important to check weekly that the paper towel or potting soil is moist by spraying it with a spray bottle, if necessary. After the stratification period, if you have opted for the paper towel, sow the seeds that have germinated in the potting soil. Germination takes an average of 1 month.
When to sow:
- Indoor sowing in winter (in February) for transplanting in late spring.
Sowing technique: in pocket
Inside the same hole, sow 3 to 5 seeds spaced 1 to 2 cm apart; when the seeds have germinated and the seedlings have reached a height of 5 cm, keep all the seedlings if space is available or keep only the most beautiful ones. Transplant into individual containers while waiting for transplanting in the garden
Transplanting outdoors :
- harden off plants outdoors and transplant when there is no risk of frost
Distance in the garden:
- between plants: 60 cm
- between rows: 60 cm
Height of plants: 50 cm
Soil: well drained, rocky or sandy, rather dry
Exposure: full sun
Days to harvest: 90 days
Maturity: the 2nd year
Specificities:
- the cultivation of the plant is easy after the germination
- mulch for winter protection, if needed
