Growing tips
Conditions of germination:
- sowing depth: sow on the surface (press the seeds lightly into the soil, but do not cover them)
- optimal temperatures for germination: 16 to 24ºC
- time to germination: 14 to 42 days
- suggested cold treatment: press seeds into moistened potting soil, then place the pot wrapped in a clear plastic bag in the refrigerator for one month. Remove the pot from the bag and germinate under the usual germination conditions of heat and light.
When to sow:
- Sow indoors between December and February for some fruit in the first year.
Sowing technique: in pocket
In the same hole, sow 3 to 5 seeds spaced 1 to 2 cm apart; when the seeds have germinated and the seedlings have reached a height of 5 cm, keep all the plants if space is available or keep only the best plants. Transplant into individual containers and wait until the seedling has produced two true leaves before transplanting into the garden.
Transplanting outdoors:
- When all risk of frost has passed.
Distance in the garden:
- between plants: 45 cm
- between rows: 60 cm
Soil: rich and well drained
Exposure: full sun
When to harvest: 100 to 120 days, but the plant produces a first real harvest in the 2nd year
Specificities:
- strawberry seeds are tiny and make handling difficult;
- cultivation of the plant is easy after germination;
- leave the runners (baby plants) in place the first year but remove them in the second year to make the plant more vigorous and encourage fruit production
- put straw around the plants during the summer to control weeds and cover the plants with straw in the winter to offer protection against sudden temperature changes
