Strawberry – Yellow Wonder Alpine
$3.99
A wild strawberry type of plant, the Wonder Alpine strawberry produces small, oblong-shaped, pale yellow/white fruits that are very fragrant. Strawberries are a bit complex to start as a seedling, but once germination is complete, it is relatively easy to grow. Slow to grow, the plant once well established will give a good yield. Suitable for growing in pots or hanging baskets. Perennial in zone 5.

Growing tips
Conditions of germination:
- sowing depth: sow on the surface (press the seeds lightly into the soil, but do not cover them)
- optimal temperature for germination: 18 to 22ºC
- time to germination: 14 to 42 days
- suggested cold treatment: press seeds into moistened potting soil, then place the pot wrapped in a clear plastic bag in the refrigerator for one month. Remove the pot from the bag and germinate under the usual germination conditions of heat and light.
When to sow:
- Sow indoors between December and February for some fruit in the first year.
Seeding technique: in line
Sow the seeds in a line. When the seeds have germinated and the seedlings have reached a height of 5 cm, keep all the plants if space is available, or keep only the best plants. Transplant into individual containers when the plants have 3 true leaves while waiting for transplanting in the garden.
Transplanting outdoors:
- Unprotected: when all risk of frost is removed, about 1 to week later; strawberries are cold and frost tolerant, but a late spring frost could disrupt the flowering of young plants.
- With unheated plastic tunnels or in a cold greenhouse: young plants can be transplanted earlier, about 1 to 2 week(s) before the last frost in your area.
Distance in the garden:
- between plants: 30-45 cm
- between rows: 60 cm
Soil: enriched with organic matter and well drained
Exposure: full sun
Average life span of seeds: 3 to 6 years
Harvest time: 120 to 150 days, but the plant produces a first real harvest from the 2nd year
Specificity:
- strawberry seeds are tiny and make handling difficult;
- to encourage rooting and development of the plant, cut off the first flowers;
- leave the runners (baby plants) in place the first year but remove them from the second year onwards to make the plant more vigorous and encourage fruit production
- put straw around the plants during the summer to control weeds and cover the plants with straw in the winter to offer protection against sudden temperature changes
