Growing tips
Conditions of germination:
- depth of sowing: 2.5 cm
- optimal temperatures of germination: 10 to 30 ºC
- time for germination: 7 to 14 days
When to sow:
- direct sowing after any risk of frost when the soil is warmed up and the temperature remains above 18-21 ºC
Sowing technique: in line
Draw a line in the soil (in a pot or in the ground), then sow the seeds in it.
Distance in the garden:
- between the seeds: 7.5-10 cm*.
- between plants: 20-30 cm
- between rows: 45-60 cm
Height of the plants: 150 to 200 cm
Soil: well drained, humid, fertile
Exposure: full sun
Days to harvest: 85-95 days
Specificities:
- *Thin out after germination when seedlings have 3 true leaves or are 5 cm tall. Transplant or consume the removed plants.
- Massed cultivation (in blocks of 4 to 6 small rows) gives better results than cultivation in a single long row since it increases the chances of pollination between male and female flowers (silks) on the plants.
- The corn is ready to be harvested when the cobs look like they are about to collapse and the silk ends have turned brown.
