Nasturtium – Empress of India
$3.99
The dwarf variety Empress of India produces delicate deep red flowers and dark green foliage. The plants reach a height of about 30-40 cm and bloom all summer long. The flowers, buds, leaves and stems are all edible, with a peppery taste reminiscent of watercress. With its drooping stems, it is very pretty in flower pots and hanging baskets.

Growing tips
Conditions of germination:
- depth of sowing: 1.5 cm
- optimal temperatures of germination: 13 to 18 ºC
- time for germination: 7 to 14 days
- although optional, scarification (softening or piercing the epidermis of a seed with a file, sandpaper or nail cutter) can facilitate germination
When to sow:
- Sow indoors 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost date in your area preferably in peat pots for easy transplanting
OR - direct seeding when the soil is warm, after the last frost in your area
Sowing technique: in pocket
In the same hole, sow 3 to 5 seeds, spacing them 1 to 2 cm apart; when the seeds have germinated and the seedlings have reached a height of 5 cm, keep only the best plants.
Transplant outdoors (for seedlings started indoors):
- When all risk of frost is eliminated
Distance in the garden:
- between plants: 15 to 30 cm
- between rows: 45 to 60 cm
Height of the plants: 30-40 cm
Soil: well drained, rather poor, slightly acid
Exposure: full sun and light shade
Flowering: from June to September
Maturation: 55 to 65 days
Specificities:
