Growing tips
When to sow:
- Direct sowing one month before the first frost in autumn (September or October).
Technique :
YEAR 1: sow bulbils in the planting hole (in loose soil enriched with compost) in the ground 2.5 cm deep and 2.5 cm apart. Cover with soil, then with a layer of mulch (straw, for example) to protect the bulbils from cold, wind, and weeds.
YEAR 2: in spring, if the bulbils have all germinated and the sowing was dense, thin out the seedlings (called aillets) to leave about 2.5 cm between each one. Do this when they have reached a height of around 15 cm (they will then look like a small chive plant). In midsummer (towards the end of July/beginning of August), dig up the small bulbs (called round bulbs) and leave to dry in a cool, dry place. Replant a month before the first autumn frost (September or October), 5 cm deep and 10 cm apart.
YEAR 3: in summer, if the plants produce a garlic flower, remove it to concentrate the plants’ energy on growing cloves. The garlic bulbs will be ready for harvesting towards the end of summer when foliage begins to dry.
Soil: rich, well-drained
Exposure: full sun
When to harvest: 3rd year
