Purslane
$3.99
Green purslane is the cultivated form of wild purslane. Unlike wild purslane, it has larger, fleshy leaves and reaches 25-30 cm when mature. In the kitchen, it is used a bit like watercress, to give “punch” to salads or to flavor soups or purées. It is an annual that can be reseeded if the plant flowers, but it will then become bitter.

Growing tips
Germination conditions:
- depth of sowing: above ground (press seeds lightly into the soil, but do not cover them)
- optimal temperature for germination: 15 to 22ºC
- time for germination: 14 to 21 days
When to sow:
- sow indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last date in your area OR
- direct seeding after any risk of frost in spring, when the soil is warmed up
Seeding technique: broadcasting
- sprinkle the seeds in the hole provided, in a container or in the ground, then spread the seeds as best as possible so that they do not overlap
Transplant outdoors (for seedlings started indoors):
- When the soil is warmed
Distance in the garden:
- between plants: 20 cm
- between rows: 30 to 45 cm
Height of the plants: 15 to 25 cm
Soil: well drained
Watering: regular to keep the soil fresh
Exposure: full sun, tolerates light shade
Maturation: 60 days, but leaves can be harvested as soon as the plant is well established, about 30 days after sowing
Specificities:
- Consume quickly after harvesting as purslane is fragile and does not keep for long
- The plant gives two to three harvests during the season, depending on the time of sowing and the growing conditions.
- Sow directly and successively every two weeks as soon as the soil is worked in spring, until September for a continuous harvest.
