Native to Japan, mizuna mustard is characterized by its toothed foliage and fine stems with a delicate taste. Sometimes called Japanese cabbage -it belongs to the botanical family Brassicaceae (crucifers)-, mizuna is a vegetable plant that prefers cold climates, that’s why it is usually sown in spring and late summer to avoid bolting during hot weather.

Growing tips
Conditions of germination:
- depth of sowing: 5 mm
- optimal temperatures for germination: 15 to 21ºC
- time for germination: 5 to 10 days
When to sow:
- direct seeding when the soil can be worked in spring and midsummer (late July/early August) for a fall harvest
Sowing technique: in pocket
Within the same hole, sow 3 to 5 seeds spaced 1 to 2 cm apart; when the seeds have germinated and the seedlings have reached a height of 5 cm, keep only the most beautiful plants and consume the removed plants.
Distance in the garden:
- between seeds: 1-5 cm (for young leaves)
- between plants: 10-15 cm (for mature leaves)
- between rows: 30-45 cm
Height of the plants: 40 cm
Soil: rich and well drained
Exposure: full sun or light shade
When to harvest (from direct sowing): 20 days for young leaves or 40 days for mature leaves
