Peanut Valencia

The plants, with foliage reminiscent of clover, produce sweet fruits containing about three seeds under the soil. Peanuts like long, hot summers, so success with this crop is not guaranteed in our climate. For best results, we have selected the short-summer cultivar Valencia and suggest starting seedlings indoors in peat cups.

Growing tips
Conditions of germination:
- depth of sowing: 1 cm
- optimal temperature for germination: 18 to 29ºC
- time for germination: 7 to 21 days
When to sow:
- sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last date in your area in peat pots so that the roots remain intact OR
- direct sowing after any risk of frost when the soil is warm
Sowing technique: in line
- draw a line in the ground (in a pot or in the ground), then sow the seeds in it
Transplanting outdoors:
- When all risk of frost is removed and the air is warm (18ºC+).
Distance in the garden:
- between plants: 25 cm
- between rows: 45 cm
Plant height: 30 cm
Soil: rich and well drained
Exposure: full sun
Harvest time: 100 to 120 days
Specificity:
- Uproot the plant in the fall when the foliage is wilted, then let them air dry before shelling and roasting them in the oven (30 minutes at 300ºF) before eating (they can also be roasted whole, increase the cooking time by a few minutes if necessary).
- You can sow the seeds if the reddish-brown skin has come off and no longer covers the peanut. Whole seeds have a better germination rate than halved seeds. However, it is possible that during harvesting or during transport the seeds may break, so we have provided more seeds in the envelopes to compensate for the hazards of handling.
